What Goes Up Can Be Lethal!

cat with balloon

The other day, my human found a balloon caught in the bushes.  She brought it in for me to play with.  This was a  FANTASTIC idea.  Not because I needed another toy (Oh – strike that – a cat can NEVER have too many toys) but because if she didn’t, the balloon could have turned into a danger for some of my friends, the deer, squirrels, bunnies, and birds.

It’s crucial to understand that most helium balloons, often made of latex, can take years to break down in the environment. The broken-down materials can be lethal for animals, leading to choking or intestinal blockage. Animals can also become entangled in balloon strings, which can strangle them or hurt their feet and hands. This is a severe threat to both wildlife and domestic animals.

Humans can also be in danger. Foil balloons made of the plastic material Mylar can conduct electricity and cause power outages when they run into power lines.

Did you know that The Balloon Council (TBC), a trade group representing balloon retailers, distributors, and manufacturers, adopted a stance AGAINST balloon releases in 2023?

My human found out that TBC Chairman Dan Flynn shared, "In the past, TBC didn't advocate for or against balloon releases; we advised people on the best practices to minimize the environmental impact, such as only using latex and not adding strings. However, as the social and political climates have changed, our position has also evolved. This change in stance fully recognizes the need for everyone to be as 'green' as possible to protect our planet." This shift in perspective is a hopeful sign for the future.”

Releasing balloons, whether by accident or purpose, constitutes littering and poses severe risks to domestic animals, wildlife, and … humans.

So, instead of planning a balloon release, consider something that’s also fun: blowing bubbles. Watching them bounce around towards the sky and twist with the wind is great. It also requires you to exhale and breathe. This is a beautiful way to release your feelings and just let go. Imagine the spectacular sight of countless bubbles floating away into the sky with a piece of every person who has gathered together!

Or, if you’re a cat, consider getting your human to rent a little bubble machine!
